July Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Cute Creatures”

The fur seals request equal time.
Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands near the Antarctic Peninsula is an active volcano. This means the waters can be warmer than in many other areas of the Antarctic. It’s quite interesting geologically if you’re interested.
In the 1900s, a commercial whaling station was based here. Over time, it was shut down and abandoned. All that remains are the remnants of a place that may have had up to 500 people living, along with the old whaling and whale oil processing equipment. It makes for interesting scenery.
Now, it’s a haven for penguins, sheathbills, skuas and petrels. While the penguins seem to get all the attention, the seal population is large, including Fur Seals, Weddell seals and Elephant Seals.
During my visit, we saw all Fur Seals. They were enjoying the warmer water and were scattered all along the beach and amongst the old equipment and buildings.
This guy was enjoying himself basking in the sun.
