A Fun Stop After Buttermere
After we left Buttermere, we thought we’d head into Keswick to wander around and maybe visit the pencil museum. Yes, Keswick is the home of the first pencil. Instead of taking the drive into another windy, curvy town center, we opted to stop at the Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum. It was right on the way back to Ullswater.
We love these quirky museums. The quarry and museum have been run for over 25 years. I’m quite sure the staff/volunteers there have worked there the entire time. They were so knowledgeable and Mike got quite a long story from one of the older men. They love to share the stories.
There is old mining equipment scattered throughout the property. It’s interesting to see some of these humongous pieces of equipment and nice to have them around to learn from.
We then hopped on one of the steam engines that runs on a narrow gauge railway. It’s about a 25-minute round trip, including a stop at the top to see more mining equipment.
When we got back down to the grounds, we popped into the museum/shop and also were invited to take a peek into one of the train maintenance buildings. It would have been easy to spend hours photographing interesting details and tools.
It was an interesting and unique place for us to stop on the way back to our hotel in Ullswater. We enjoyed the Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum.
